In August and October 2018, SSP invited some very special guests into our offices – our kids! Across the globe, we held our inaugural Bring Your Kids to Work Day (BYK2WD) events and it’s fair to say that all the kids – big and small – had a great time!

Originally an idea hatched by Zain Cassimjee, SSP’s Application Consultant, the initiative attracted lots of positive support from everyone at SSP and so it was agreed that we’d bring the idea to life on a global scale! Starting with the UK and India in August, the offices in South Africa, New Zealand and the USA followed suit throughout September and October.
The day was planned and implemented by SSP’s Diversity Working Party who are keen to promote a healthy work-life balance.
What did the kids get up to?
Volunteers in each of our offices organised a packed schedule for the kids, kicking off with an introduction to SSP and an explanation of ‘what is insurance’. This was followed by a mixture of sessions, including a LEGO challenge, art activity and a coding challenge, all designed and run by members of the SSP team, giving them various problems to sort and activities to tackle. A parent-led scavenger hunt followed, where kids were asked to solve riddles pointing them to various office items and also to try and find hidden words around the office that together made a mystery sentence. And what was that sentence? ‘SSP is a cool place to work’ of course!

The children also learnt all about the SSP brand values and created posters on what the values meant to them. The SSP marketing team are now hatching a plan to create these into real-life posters to put up around the offices and keep your eyes peeled, you may even see their handiwork feature in our SSP Christmas e-card this year!

It was great to hear some of the feedback, with one mum commenting that her child had said, “When I go back to school and am asked about what I did in the holidays I am going to tell my class that today was the best day ever!”
The good feedback also came from the parents who brought their kids into work, with one employee commenting, “I loved the presentation at the beginning, I wish someone had explained insurance to me in that way. I truly think BYKTWD strengthens the company’s values and left a positive impression on everyone’.
Finally, for the older kids, we held a CV writing and interview skills session where they had the opportunity to ask members of the team for help and advice on the world of work and what to expect in a few years’ time once they finish school. It was great to hear about their ambitions and plans for their future, with some as wide-ranging as palaeontology, political domination and sandwich chain ownership “because of all the free food!” being discussed!
Jemma McKenzie, HR Director said:
“One of the most positive days I have experienced in my working career. You couldn’t help but smile at the curiosity of our future generation. Feedback from the day demonstrates we have really helped to build a connection for that work and home life balance and we have even got our first recruit following the day.”
We had better start planning the next one!…
